Johnson
Scores 2nd Jr. Fuel Title
Kol Johnson wheeled
the Big Yohns - Johnson Family Jr. Fuel dragster to a brilliant
win at Pomona. The crew celebrated their second and arguably
biggest win to date long into the warm California night.
For several reasons
including the warm weather and Fathers Day, the format for this
event was 2 days (Friday and Saturday) with racing from morning
'till night. The large car count and a 10 pm curfew at Pomona
forced the Goodguys to further alter the schedule and limit several
classes to only two qualifying sessions - both on Friday. For
the Johnson's this was not a problem and by most accounts, it
did not upset most of the other teams. The first session was
held in the heat on Friday afternoon.
On Friday, Kol Johnson qualified
their Meyer chassied car #4 with a 7.591 @ 175.95.
In the first round on a still
very warm track, Johnson beat Neil O'Kane 7.636 @ 176.33 to 7.922
167.09
In round two Johnson had the
tough task of getting by the hottest driver in the class, Don
Enriquez. As it turned out Enriquez caught a rare red light handing
Kol a free trip to the finals.
The final went
off at 9:40 PM paring Kol Johnson and seasoned vet, Bud Hammer.
There was no luck involved in this one ... Johnson won it on
a holeshot 7.675 150.27 to a quicker and faster 7.671 180.75.
To top it off, Johnson broke a water line at the 1000 foot mark
and literally drove the last 300 feet blind (which explains the
slower speed).
